SM Prime Holdings mall builds homes for poor neighbors

The ICSC Foundation has honored SM Prime Holdings, of the Philippines, with this year’s Asia Community Support Award for the “Breaking the Poverty Chain” campaign, at RECon Asia.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the SM North Edsa Mall, the owners wanted a campaign that would give back to the community. The company teamed with Gawad Kalinga, a local charity, to establish the SM City GK Village, a neighborhood of new homes for poor families. The village accommodated 100 families and converted former slums into a fully functioning community.

The mall will receive a $5,000 donation and is eligible for the ICSC Foundation’s 2011 Albert Sussman International Community Support Award, which recognizes the best program worldwide. The ICSC Foundation’s Community Support Awards, established in 2006, is a worldwide awards program that honors corporate social responsibility and community outreach efforts of shopping centers for charitable initiatives that enhance the communities the retail real estate industry serve.
