When asked about the future of diversification in relation to small mom and pop stores in1983, Stanley Marcus replied, “I’m very bullish about the independent merchant. Someday the department store will wake up and say: Where’s our business gone? There going to find that large segments of it have moved to small independent specialty stores.”
