Get to know the #iTechLounge Speakers: Diana Podaski

I pack my calendar to fill my days, nights and minutes with a mix of work hard, play hard. I’m the Marketing & Social Media Manager at Linear Retail out of Boston, MA. I specialize in corporate marketing, PR, web, advertising, SEO, brand strategy, new communication technologies, corporate events and working with independent retailers. I am Co-chair of the ICSC Boston Next Generation Committee and serve as a member on the ICSC New England Idea Exchange and ICSC MOCIAL Committee.  One of my favorite industry commitments is writing for the largest weekly real estate newspaper in the country, New England and New York Real Estate Journal where I have a (rather witty) column titled, “Dishing Social Media.”  When I’m not working you can find me at a Zumba class or a guitar lesson, any place that has live music, wine tasting in the city or escaping to CT (where I’m originally from), Lake Winni or Cape Cod and the Islands.
 
WHERE IS THE INDUSTRY HEADING IN REGARDS TO MOBILE, SOCIAL AND DIGITAL IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS?
All arrows point to mobile and I have to agree. The biggest area I see mobile playing a role is at the shopping center level. I really feel that the utilization of mobile sets retailers apart and those that don’t get on board will fall off the wagon. My favorite part about mobile, social and local is the advantage that I think it gives to the independent retailer. Nationals have the dollars and man power but I’ve really seen the local guys doing it best by maximizing profits with local communication on their Facebook pages, Twitter feeds, Pinterest accounts and the creation of mobile apps and reward programs. Our industry is slow to pick up on new technologies, much more than most industries, but in five years I definitely see everyone moving from thinking it’s a big deal to knowing it’s a big deal. Plus, I’ve seen a lot less 10 lb. binders at the tradeshows these days – a sign in the right direction.
 
FAVORITE SOCIAL NETWORK
My favorite social network is Twitter. Those that don’t understand why don’t understand Twitter. It is an amazing search tool and creates community groups easily with the simple use of a hashtag. I also love that it only includes 140 characters. Most people just skim and read headlines anyway.
 
FAVORITE MOBILE APPS
My favorite mobile apps include LevelUp – a mobile payment program, Beatthetraffic – a navigation app that helps me to see where traffic is so that I can best avoid it, CloudOn – which helps me access and edit documents and Pandora – online radio that suggests songs based on your chosen artist or song. Life is always sweeter with Pandora in my ear.
 
ABOUT MY SESSIONS AT iTECH LOUNGE, WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT TO HEAR?
I have two sessions at the iTech Lounges, one on “How to Speak the Tweet” and the other on, “The Importance of Video in Retail Real Estate.” In referencing, “speaking the tweet” I’ll be giving a 101 session on how to craft the perfect 140 characters to get your message across. I’ll be talking about how to use the search tool, Twitter handles and hashtags. The video session will be on how you can incorporate video into your marketing program with a focus on B2B. This will include videos related to leasing, company testimonials, site tours, blogging and more.
