New York, January 20, 2011- The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Caribbean Conference was truly a success with close to 400 retail real estate professionals from around the world in attendance. This conference featured professional development opportunities, informative sessions on current industry trends led by experts in the field, tours of local shopping centers, networking, and a full day of deal making. The conference took place January 18-20, 2011 at the El San Juan Hotel and Casino, San Juan Puerto Rico.

“The Caribbean is a very integral region for ICSC and its members,” said Jorge Lizan, vice president of business development for ICSC. “As such, we decided to integrate this conference with the rest of our activities throughout Latin America, giving this region the recognition and visibility it deserves. We are very pleased with how the conference was received and we look forward to building on that success next year,” Lizan added.

A full day of deal making was featured at this year’s conference, affording attendees the opportunity to discuss business opportunities throughout the region. Twenty exhibitors were on site and the deal making hall was at maximum capacity. The deal making floors were open January 19, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

This year’s prominent guest speakers included William Taubman, ICSC chairman and CEO of Taubman Centers, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; John Kokinchak, senior executive vice president of property management, Developers Diversified Realty, Beachwood, Ohio; David Henry, CEO of Kimco Realty Corporation, New Hyde Park, N.Y.; Carl Goertemoeller, senior vice president, Macy’s Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio; and Bradley Syverson, vice president of real estate, J.C. Penny, Plano, Texas. These speakers discussed issues such as challenges and opportunities in the Caribbean market, future expectations, and a reflection as to why the Caribbean region is so important to the retail real estate industry.

The study tour of four local shopping centers provided attendees with the opportunity to view new ideas and innovations that could be implemented into their own centers. Attendees were able to meet with the management teams of each center, share experiences, and discuss architectural and design concepts. The tour included; Plaza Del Norte in Hatillo, Puerto Rico; Puerto Rico Premium Outlets in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico; Plaza Las Americas in Hato Rey, San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Plaza Del Sol in Bayamon, San Juan, Puerto Rico.
