Ever wonder what shopping magazines were like in the 1980s? Well, it was a whole lot different then online shopping. The strategy for mail order catalogs was solely the idea of luxury. The more glamour in the magazine the higher the sales were for the retail store.

When asked about the future of diversification in relation to small mom and pop stores in1983, Stanley Marcus replied, "I’m very bullish about the independent merchant. Someday the department store will wake up and say: Where’s our business gone? There going to find that large segments of it have moved to small independent specialty stores."
